Thread Storage and Organisation

There are several ways to store and organise the thread that you collect. DMC have recently brought out a new system which is specific to their threads. Bobbin boxes are the most widley used, but there is also a system from LO-Ran. Madiera thread, with it's spiral packaging is much simpler to store.

DMC Gold Concept

The Gold concept is based on the "Stitch Bow" which is a plastic wand the size of a looped skein.

This product is being marketed in Europe only

The bows sit in a storage box which holds 50 bows.
There are also available a set of printed labels for each DMC skein to use in the boxes
The loading of the bows is simplicity itself.

Hook one end of the skein onto the top of the bow.

Pull the label off downward.
Do not throw the number away

Catch the bottom of the skein onto the bow

Slip the number onto holder.
There is also a transparent plastic file page that fits into a standard spring clip file

Bobbin Boxes

Rewinding thread onto plastic or card bobbins may be time consuming but the thread is easy to use and there is no risk of a tangled mess in the workbasket.
Thread Organiser boxes come in various sizes.
Make sure the box is deep enough to hold the bobbins upright.
There are several manufacturers - You will pay more for "Branded" makes.
There are two types of bobbin.
  1. Plastic - sold in packs of 30 or 50
  2. Card - usually sold in sheets or packed as above

There is a winder available which clips onto the side of the box.
Not necessary but does speed things up slightly

LoRan System

LoRan is an American Company whose products are distributed in Europe through DMC
The LoRan system consists of a soft folder / file, and card strips to attach the thread to

The cards come with pre-cut holes for both the thread and to fit in the folder

  • The Thread list is an idex to indicate which card contains the colour you want
  • The Mastercard holds 15 threads
The thread is cut into workable strips and looped so that one pull and the thread is available to sew with.
There is also a Project case to compliment the folder.

Spiral Packs
  • 10 metres in length
    Skeins are 8 metres

  • No need to rewind
  • The number is easily readable
  • Less chance of tangle or knots
Cut the bottom and pull the thread out
Use a keyring or specially made holders
Or Store them in Boxes
